Modern Dance MFA Admission & Auditions

The MFA in Modern Dance at the University of Utah is a physical, creative, practice-focused art-making degree.

 

Auditions

The Modern Dance Grad audition is now scheduled for: Friday, January 27, 2023

Acceptance into the MFA Program in Modern Dance is determined by application and audition.

Applicants must demonstrate:
1. 3+ years of professional activity in the contemporary dance field (performance, choreography, teaching, screendance, curation, etc.). 
2. Strong teaching abilities in subject areas relevant to the growth of contemporary dance.
3. A clear justification as to why they wish to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree.
4. Articulation of personal interests, areas of study, or creative/theoretical inquiry that could be developed further through a practice-based, thesis research agenda.

Auditions are for acceptance as Graduate Student Teaching Assistants which includes full funding, stipend, tuition waivers and access to University health insurance.
All applicants must be accepted into both the MFA program in Modern Dance and the University of Utah. You can apply to both the School of Dance and the University of Utah through the ApplyYourself application link at the bottom of this page. Application fees for the MFA audition can also be submitted through the link at the bottom. Only those candidates who have applied to the University are eligible to audition.

A Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required for acceptance into the Program. 


Application Materials

Application Materials are to be uploaded into ApplyYourself (see link at bottom)

  1. Creative work: Please include links to examples of 1-3 of your recent choreographic or performance projects. These may include solo and/or group pieces, as well as other relevant creative work. Include a description of the ideas explored through each work. (10 minutes max.)

  2. Teaching samples: Please include links to examples of you teaching a physical practice, improvisation, composition, or theory class.
     
  3. Two letters of recommendation from professionals in the dance field. 

  4. CV or resume

  5. Transcripts

  6. 3-4 page Personal Statement that articulates why you are interested in pursuing an MFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah including: 1) goals you have for graduate school; 2) possible arts-, movement-, and practice-based research interests (choreography, performance, screendance, criticism and theory, interdisciplinary arts and technology, arts-in-health, other creative practices, etc.,); 3) how your experiences in dance and life have prepared you for a Master of Fine Arts degree in Modern Dance.

International Applicants

International students must be accepted into the University in order to be accepted into the School of Dance MFA programs. This includes meeting or exceeding the University TOEFL requirements. International students may audition online by uploading video that demonstrates speaking about your professional interests in dance as well as why the University of Utah is your chosen school. Students whose native language is not English are required to submit scores received on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) as part of their application. Applications are not considered complete without the most recent test scores.

Graduate Tuition Benefit

All School of Dance graduate students are fully funded and receive a full-time (12 credits) Tuition Waiver for each semester, with accompanying stipend divided across each semester and paid according to the University payroll schedule.
