School of Dance to Take Over Arts Bash

Students and faculty from the School of Dance will move the hearts, minds and, of course, the bodies of hundreds of University of Utah students this Wednesday, during Arts Bash. This annual event showcases the creativity, hard work, and innovative spirit of the different departments of the College of Fine Arts.

Modern Dance MFA candidate, Nick Blaylock, will kick-off the School of Dance’s performances on Wednesday, and will be followed by Modern Dance MFA candidate Michael Crotty.

Michael will present an excerpt from an evening-length work titled The Big What If. Michael’s piece, based on research about tropes in classic tales, reimagines classic tales in an attempt to queer coming-of-age stories. “In essence, we simply deconstruct fairy tales to suit our desires in an attempt to reimagine ourselves in history and locate our desires as they relate to adolescence,” says Michael.

During Arts Bash, Michael will present a duet featuring undergraduate students Nicholas Gibas and Lydia Lynn Pohly. This is your opportunity to see part what will be an evening titled WOW, a co-production with Nick Blaylock on Friday, October 28, at the Marriot Center for Dance.

After Michael's excerpt, ballet student Alyssa Bertelsen is giving us “a whirl of movement and joy” through a blend of classical ballet and folk dance to the sounds of Celtic-inspired music. Alyssa’s piece, Overflow, will feature 12 ballet students: Jane MaLay, Emily Hug, Natalie Dellutri, Madeline Jones, Sydney Joy, Haley Gentry, Anna Gentry, Peyton Bruce, Sarah Murphy, Alessandra De Paolantonio, Madeline McLaughlin, Madeline Driver, and Savannah Hunter. Alyssa describes the piece as “very high energy and celebratory in nature, but with a section of high intensity and hopelessness in the middle. [This piece is about] hope that comes from relationships and community.”

After Alyssa’s piece, School of Dance faculty, Molly Heller and Michael Wall, will take over Arts Bash for an exciting improvisation jam that you don’t want to miss.

Join the School of Dance this Wednesday for Arts Bash, and experience an overload of creativity, inspiration, and collaboration.
