Student Profile: Ali Lorenz

Senior dancer Ali Lorenz has danced in the last three senior modern dance concerts. However, this year is different. This time Lorenz presents her work and faces the final weeks of her time at the University of Utah.

In 'Xx: Modern Dance Senior Concert 1', Lorenz presents her latest work, Come and Gone, a piece created collaboratively with her six dancers. The work began last semester when Lorenz took a science course to ensure her graduation titled 'Earthquakes and Volcanoes.' Through the course content, Lorenz felt a resonance with the hidden systems in the earth and has spent this rehearsal process translating the systems of the earth to our personal emotional experiences.

Built with time to think, feel, improvise, and write, Come and Gone promises to be reflective and readable from many perspectives. Throughout our interview, it sounds as if Lorenz is using scientific systems such as seafloor spreading or elastic rebound to explore her emotional landscape, and has invited the dancers to join in the process. Created at a pivotal moment in her life and creative career, standing at the brink of graduation, it's no wonder that Lorenz is examining the sensations and ideas of emergence and change in her culminating work.

Originally from Seattle, WA, Lorenz plans on staying in Salt Lake City for some time after graduating. She will finish up her Yoga Teacher Training through the U this summer and looks forward to "meeting more people and moving with more people.” Emboldened with the skills gained through a modern dance major, Lorenz stands poised to forge her path in the dance world.

Lorenz is one of ten seniors in the modern dance program presenting work this weekend. Showtimes are Thursday at 5:30 PM and Friday/Saturday at 7:30 PM at the Hayes Christiansen Theater, Marriott Center for Dance. Another set of seniors take the stage March 21-23.

The senior class is hosting a silent auction to raise money for advertising, programs, and their post-show reception. They have great items to auction off from donors such as Red Butte Garden, Sugarhouse Coffee, Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company, and many more! Bidding will take place before and after the shows, as well as at intermission. Bring your cash and checks (only), and come support the senior class!  Tickets are available in advance at tickets.utah.edu and at the door.
