Professional Track Policy

PROFESSIONAL TRACK

Currently matriculated School of Dance majors who are offered professional performance contracts may be eligible for the SOD Professional Track. The Professional Track is by application only and must be approved the SOD Director (or delegate). Once accepted into the Professional Track, students may be permitted to receive credit for professional work by registering for “Professional” courses.

Criteria for applying to the Professional Track:

  • Acceptance as a BFA student in the University of Utah’s School of Dance.

  • Professional contract (copy of contract/offer must be submitted with application):

    • Hiring entity must be a professional company, not a school

    • Position must be as a trainee, apprentice, company member, or similar title

    • Position must include performance opportunities with a professional company, not a school

 

PROFESSIONAL COURSES

Once accepted into the Professional Track, students may be permitted to receive credit for their professional work through registering for “Professional” courses.

  • For course credit, the hours a student spends training, rehearsing, and/or performing off-campus must be equal to the hours a student would spend dancing on campus.

  • The University credit hour policy mandates that 45 hours of work per semester is equal to 1 credit hour.

  • Available professional courses include:

    • BALLE 4425 – Repertoire: Professional (2)

    • BALLE 4585 – Partnering: Professional (1)

    • BALLE 4670 – Performance Credit: Professional (1-3)

    • BALLE 4720 – Pointe/Variations: Professional (1)

    • BALLE 4725 – Traditional Male Ballet Technique & Variations (1)

    • BALLE 4790 – Ballet Technique: Professional (3)

  • Note that other BFA required courses may not be available for completion remotely. It is not currently possible to complete the BFA in Ballet without registering for some in-person courses.
