Space Usage Policy

School of Dance Policy on use of Marriott Center for Dance facilities to teach private lessons or other activities for personal profit to persons, firms, agencies, or students not enrolled in the University of Utah.

  • Liability Waiver

    • The faculty/staff member must obtain a signed Assumption of Risk, Informed Consent, and Waiver of Liability and Indemnification Agreement for each student, participant, or observer who is not a matriculated student in the School of Dance. Such a liability waiver must be received by the SOD prior to the space usage. A liability waiver does not supersede the need for the employee to adequately manage their activities, particularly when minors are involved.)

  • Minors on Campus

    • If a minor is involved as a student, participant, or observer, the employee must comply with University Policy 1-015: Safety of Minors and requirements from the Youth Protection and Program Support (YPPS). This requires the employee to be an Authorized Adult by completing the Youth Protection Mandatory Training and passing a background check every three (3) years. Because the Safety of Minors Policy and Rules prohibit one-on-one interaction between an adult and minor, the parent/legal guardian of the minor must remain in the space during the coaching, teaching, consulting, or other activity.

  • Free Use of Facilities

    • A School of Dance (SOD) faculty/staff member is free to use SOD facilities to perform activities connected to curriculum or service for the University, including coaching of matriculated students of the SOD provided without additional compensation and at no additional cost to the student. This service is considered to be within the course and scope of the employee’s employment with the University. If the employee will need a studio or classroom for this purpose, it must be scheduled through the Administrative Assistant to avoid conflicts. If the employee will need the theatre for this purpose, they must coordinate with the Production Director.

    • SOD faculty members with research responsibilities as part of their workload are free to use SOD facilities to perform activities connected to their research, including other persons, firms, agencies, or students not enrolled in the University of Utah provided the faculty member is not gaining a personal profit from the activities. If the employee will need a studio or classroom for this purpose, it must be approved by the SOD Director and scheduled through the Administrative Assistant to avoid conflicts. If the employee will need the theatre for this purpose, it must be approved by the SOD Director and the faculty member must coordinate with the Production Director on theatre availability.

  • Paid Use of Facilities (Facility Rentals)

    • A SOD faculty/staff member may rent studio, theatre, classroom, and office space in the Marriott Center for Dance (MCD) for coaching, teaching, consulting, or other activities outside the employee’s assigned duties and outside the course and scope of the employee’s employment with the University provided:

      • The employee complies with University Policy 5-204: Remunerative Consultation and Other Employment Activities, including:

        • the performance of such services does not interfere with the individual's service obligations to the University,

        • the person, firm, or agency for whom such consultation services are to be performed signs the Consulting Services Agreement form,

        • the employee pays the rental fees established for University of Utah faculty/staff (fees may be waived if the employee is not charging the students, participants, or observers for the employee’s services or if the fees charged do not exceed the cost to the employee to perform the agreed upon services), and

        • the employee receives approval from the SOD Director prior to the space usage

      • The employee may hold a Masterclass or larger rental in the studios by following the guidelines of a normal Studio Rental Request.

      • The employee may hold a Masterclass or larger rental in the MCD Theatre by following the guidelines of a normal Theatre Rental Request.
