Joselli Deans Presented at Women in Dance Conference

Earlier this year, Professor Joselli Deans served as a pen member for a panel discussion at the Women in Dance Conference in Los Angeles, California. The panel was titled “Teaching Dance History in the 21st Century: Challenges, Directions, and Directives in Changing Paradigms.”

Panel Description:
As we navigate the changing landscapes of our global world, the paradigms for teaching dance history have morphed and changed to meet the demands of the new generation where the world has become ‘smaller’ and the historical lens is both reflective and refractive. In teaching: How do we cover everything? What is essential knowledge? What constructs do students know and understand? Are people, places, and events still relevant? These and other questions will be addressed along with discussions on moving from linear design to theme and concept-based approaches. This panel offers four points of view in a meaningful and insightful discussion on reframing content and context of what and how we teach the history of dance.
