PDC Takes the Stage

The University of Utah’s School of Dance is thrilled to announce the upcoming Performing Dance Company (PDC) concert. The company will feature five new exhilarating choreographic pieces showcasing poetic energy, transition, and unexpected possibilities.

Jackie “AKA Miss Funk” Lopez is a Los Angeles based guest choreographer, and co-founder and artistic director of the Versa-Style Dance Company. Lopez’s piece, Warriors of Light, is inspired by the words of Joshua Graham, “I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.” Lopez’s work delivers a unique and innovative perspective that is inspiring and visually charged.

Viewers can’t help but be drawn in as School of Dance faculty member, Sharee Lane, reflects on her 28 years of teaching, choreographing, and mentoring students in her piece, Doorway. Lane’s work reveals unexpected opportunities of growth, evolution of self, and unpredictability as she approaches retirement in May 2017.

Faculty members Daniel Clifton and Satu Hummasti have created a unique collaboration featuring two separate pieces set within a forest. The first piece, Turn Around, incorporates 10 dancers, with an original sound score produced by Clifton. The second piece, Bright Eyes, showcases Hummasti’s dancers use of improvisational text scores. While both dances share scenic elements, they each present challenging and dynamic explorations of human activity that will excite patrons and keep them on their toes.

Faculty member and choreographer, Eric Handman, attempts to produce poetry out of energized states in Alarm Will Sound. Handman utilizes gravity, pressure, and centrifugal force to achieve group dynamics that are rigorous and unpredictable. Handman provides a unique point of view that supports an aesthetic that blends distilled movement interaction with visceral kinetic energy.

The Performing Dance Company offers something for audiences of all ages with its fresh repertoire. It encourages both performers and audience members to rethink their awareness of place and identity in these playful and unexpected pieces. Each of the works highlight the dancer’s impressive and diverse talents while breaking down conventional barriers.
